Early Sod Care

How to Protect Your Investment from Day One

Proper care in the first few weeks determines how well your new sod establishes and how long it thrives. Whether you’re installing sod at a home, golf course, athletic field, or commercial property, following the correct early maintenance steps will ensure strong rooting, healthy color, and long-term success.

1 - Water Immediately After Installation

New sod begins drying the moment it’s laid, so watering should start within 20 minutes of installation.

  • Apply at least 1 inch of water right away
  • Use sprinklers or irrigation systems for even coverage
  • Edges, seams, and areas near buildings may need extra attention due to reflected heat

Tip: To measure water output, place an empty can near the sprinkler. When the can fills to 1 inch, it’s time to move to the next section.

2 - Maintain a Frequent Watering Schedule

The goal is to keep the sod and soil consistently moist—but not flooded—until roots establish.

Days 1–10:

  • Water 2–3 times per day, depending on weather
  • Avoid letting the sod dry out between watering cycles

Days 10–21:

  • Transition to once-per-day deep watering
  • Check for rooting by gently lifting the edge of a sod piece

After 3 Weeks:

  • Begin reducing frequency, but increase water depth
  • Most lawns do well with 1–1.5 inches of water per week

3 - Limit Foot Traffic

During the first 2–3 weeks, avoid:

  • Walking on newly laid sod
  • Allowing pets, equipment, or children on the area
  • Mowing before roots establish

Premature traffic can cause shifting, air pockets, and root damage.

4 - First Mowing Guidelines

You can mow once the sod has rooted and reached about 3 inches in height.

  • Never remove more than one-third of the blade length at a time
  • Use a sharp mower blade to avoid tearing
  • Avoid riding mowers on new sod if possible

5 - Fertilizing New Sod

If a starter fertilizer was applied prior to installation, wait 4–6 weeks before feeding again.

  • Use a balanced or slow-release fertilizer once roots are established
  • Avoid high-nitrogen products early on unless recommended

6 - Monitor Edges and Seams

Edges dry out faster than interior sections.

  • Check border areas daily
  • Hand-water trouble spots
  • Look for shrinking, curling, or browning

7 - Watch for Air Pockets and Settling

If any sections feel spongy or uneven:

  • Lightly roll or press them flat
  • Add soil to low spots if needed
  • Address before roots fully establish

8 - Prevent Weed Interference

Avoid using herbicides in the first 30 days. After the sod is rooted:

  • Spot-treat weeds if necessary
  • Maintain proper mowing and watering to suppress weed growth naturally
